に対する異端思想家たちの思想を紹介。バラモン教の身分制度の崩壊に伴い、新しい価値観を模索する自由思想家が現れた。不可知論、四元素説、快楽主義、輪廻否定など。

不可知論者のサンジャヤ・ベーラッティプッタは、判断留保を説いた。これが釈迦の思想に影響を与えたとされる。
Sanjaya Belatthiputta, a proponent of skepticism, advocated the suspension of judgment. This is said to have influenced the Buddha's teachings.
味たは四元素説を唱え、魂は死後集合に戻ると説いた。来世はなく、現世の快楽のみを説いた。
Ajita propounded the four elements theory and claimed that the soul returns to the aggregate after death. He denied the afterlife and preached the pursuit of pleasure in this life.
パクダカッチャーヤナは四元素に加え苦楽命の要素を説いた。因果応報や輪廻を否定した。
Pakudha Kaccayana added suffering, pleasure, and life to the four elements. He denied karma and reincarnation.
プーラナ・カッサパは魂の不生不滅を説き、行為が魂に影響しないと主張した。善悪での報いを否定した。
Purana Kassapa claimed the soul is unborn and indestructible, unaffected by actions. He denied retribution based on good and evil deeds.
マッカリ・ゴーサーラは840万代行の輪廻を説き、宿命論を唱えた。行為は宿命に左右されず、意志は無意味とされた。
Makkhali Gosala spoke of 840,000 cycles of reincarnation and propounded fatalism. Actions were deemed irrelevant to one's destiny, rendering free will meaningless.
